Color Psychology in Interior Design: How Colors Influence Mood and Behavior

According to the famous psychologist Carl Jung, “Colours are the mother tongue of the subconscious.” In the realm of interior design, the importance of colours is non-debatable. Many home interior designers in Bangalore opine that colours have the power to influence your mood, perceptions and emotions. Therefore, as a new homeowner, you need to know how colour psychology works in the interior design process.

In this blog, let’s look at ways in which some colours influence your decision-making.

Red: Radiant or Rowdy?

Red colour has arguably the most conflicted perceptions in colour psychology. Many people associate the colour red with positivity like love, passion and excitement. However, there are other notions about it, such as evil, danger or hatred. Now, if you are someone who is fond of this colour, you will surely want it to be included in your home interior design in the form of wall paint, wallpaper, or ceiling colours. Other than that, you can also go for red interior décor items such as reading chairs, bookcases, rugs, or furniture items.

Yellow: Sunshine or Substandard?

There are varying feelings about the yellow – the colour of sunshine. It is generally considered a happy colour due to its warm undertones. It is very popular in modern home design, especially for kitchens and hallways. One of the main reasons for its almost universal acceptance is that this colour blends well with both artificial and natural light. However, there are negative connotations about it as well, like sickness, low quality, and decay. This makes it harder for some people to accept this colour as a key element in their home design

Green: Joy or Jealousy?

In terms of interior design, the green colour has quite a fan following. This is mainly because whenever we think of something green, we are naturally reminded of nature. Although, nature can be notorious if you try to hinder its natural course. Similarly, in interior design, green colour is used very carefully to create beautiful and elegant living spaces. Moreover, its association with good taste, health, money, and security makes it a popular choice among both interior designers and homeowners.

Pink: Feminine and Flirty

Other than some stereotypical notions of pink being a feminine colour, there are no negative connotations about it in terms of colour psychology. Similarly, in terms of interior design, any bad notions associated with this colour are yet to be found. Different shades of pink are generally used for bedrooms, living rooms, halls, and the kitchen – you name it. However, to avoid making your interiors look too pink, it is best to combine it with neutralising colours such as grey, beige or white.

Blue: Royal and Relaxing

Different shades of blue display different psychological aspects in terms of interior design. For example, light shades of blue, such as sky blue or aquatic blue, can create a calming and refreshing effect on your mind. Whereas darker shades of blue like navy and sapphire radiate royalty and luxury. If you like the colour, you can use its lighter shades for your living room, hall, or dining area; and darker shades like royal blue for personal spaces like your bedroom and home office.

Orange: Prestige and Prosperity

Orange is a zesty, vibrant colour that can be used in bedrooms, living rooms and kitchens. It has a huge following among new homeowners due to its distinctive features, such as radiating warmth and freshness, while also being a symbol of optimism. The colour orange is also known to boost appetite, which is why this colour palette is widely used for kitchen interior design. Although orange is a beautiful colour, it can be too much on its own. To neutralise its effect, it is suggested that you combine it with calming colours such as beige, light brown or eggshell white.

Black: Beauty or the Beast?

It is a widely known fact that people have contradictory notions regarding this colour in both the senses – positive and negative. Those who are fond of it attribute it to qualities, such as power, sophistication, elegance, and class. On the other hand, there are many people who consider it to be the epitome of falsehood, darkness, and evil.

In terms of home interior design, black colour is generally combined with other colours to reduce its gloomy effect and bring out its beauty. This idea works very well because black is one of the most versatile colours and can be paired with almost every colour. Modern interior designers rarely promote an all-black interior unless it is personally requested by the homeowner.
